Kakunosuke Nakamura, the pioneer of Japan’s football, was born in Hamanomiya, Nachi-Katsuura town, Wakayama Prefecture in May 1878. In 1902, he translated “Association Football”, published Japan’s first football guidance book, founded the first football club and conducted the country’s first football match while attending Tokyo Higher Normal School (now Tsukuba University).
He worked on building foundations for Japan’s football but died suddenly in 1906 at the age of 29. In his memoriam, JFA (Japan Football Association) took “Yatagarasu, the three-legged crow” as their symbol. It is a legendary bird of Kumano area (Wakayama and Mie), the birthplace of Kakunosuke Nakamura.
In 2002, Kakunosuke Nakamura was honored as the 53rd Person of Cultural Merit by Wakayama Prefecture Culture Association. His achievement will be remembered and prided by Hamanomiya and Kumano citizens, and will be passed down forever. On 10 September 2021, Kakunosuke Nakamura was made an Honorary Citizen of the town of Nachi-Katsuura.
